GOVERNOR KAINE REQUESTS FEDERAL DISASTER ASSISTANCE IN WAKE OF SEVERE WEATHER

RICHMOND, Va. — Governor Timothy M. Kaine today asked President George W. Bush for a federal disaster declaration for 25 localities in Virginia where severe weather that began on August 29 and Tropical Depression Ernesto caused flooding and high winds that killed six people and caused an estimated $104 million in damage.

"Ernesto and the storms before it brought massive amounts of rain in a short period of time to Virginia," said Governor Kaine. "This federal assistance is vitally needed to help many of our people, businesses and localities recover from the damage they have sustained."

The Governor has requested Individual Assistance for nine localities: the counties of Accomack, Gloucester, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex and Northumberland, and the cities of Hampton, Newport News and Richmond. If approved by the President, the Individual Assistance Program would make funding available for homeowners and renters in the form of low interest loans and grants, unemployment assistance, disaster housing assistance and crisis counseling.

The Governor also has requested Public Assistance for 25 localities: the counties of Accomack, Caroline, Charles City, Dinwiddie, Essex, Gloucester, Isle of Wight, James City, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northampton, Northumberland, Richmond, Southampton, Surry, Sussex, Westmoreland and York, and the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson and Richmond. Public Assistance would make funding available to cover eligible costs for damage to critical infrastructure, debris removal and related emergency services.

In addition, Governor Kaine requested Hazard Mitigation Assistance for all Virginia localities. The Hazard Mitigation Assistance program helps local and state governments take actions to reduce the impact of future disasters.
